Mission Statement

Merriam Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a family of caring people serving in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The church is a diversely gifted people, serving any and all, willingly excluding no one, united to affirm our unity in Christ.

The church seeks to provide a supportive community atmosphere to address the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of those we meet.  This is a place of celebration, hope, meditation, prayer, and faith.  Through study, reflection, and worship, we experience and share the eternal love of God.

The congregation, ordained clergy and staff of the Merriam Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) warmly extend the loving handshake and embrace of Christian fellowship to our visitors and guests.  Whether you are only traveling through our community or earnestly exploring a new church home, you are always WELCOME.  We would be honored by your presence, and look forward to greeting and meeting you.

Merriam Christian has long been and continues to be a vital part of the religious and social fabric of Johnson County, Kansas.  Our Church was organized on February 16, 1913 as a Community Sunday School and met in a former schoolhouse which still stands one block north on Merriam Drive.  Our present site was purchased in 1914, and our sanctuary was constructed in 1926.

Our symbol is the red chalice bearing the cross

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was born of Frontier America and the search by American settlers for an open, unifying “Christian Church” based on a simple New Testament faith.  The Bible is our guide for Christian faith and living, and each member is free to explore and interpret the Scriptures according to his or her own experience.  Today the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is one of the largest denominations founded on American soil.

We are not the only Christians, but seek to follow Jesus Christ only.  We celebrate the Lord’s Supper at every worship service and on special occasions.  All Christians, of any denomination or Christian tradition, are welcome and encouraged to participate in Holy Communion.

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:26

Worship Services

Merriam Christian has two Sunday morning worship services, an “early” service in the first floor chapel at 8:30 a.m. and a “late” worship service in the upper level sanctuary at 10:45 a.m.  The bulletin for our Sunday worship services contains information about the service itself and church news and activities.  Participation in the service is easily accomplished with a bulletin in hand.  Child care is provided.

Christian Education and Activities

Merriam Christian sponsors a host of activities including Sunday School classes each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., Bible study groups, children and youth programs, adult fellowships, local and world outreach ministries, prayer vigils, etc.  Whatever your age or interest, there are abundant opportunities to learn and discover more about the Gospel message and the love of Jesus Christ and express your faith through worship, service and fellowship.

Music Ministries

Music is an important part of Merriam Christian’s ministries.  Whether you have a musical gift to share or simply enjoy music, presentations by our Chancel, Bell and Children’s Choirs and Organist promise to be an enriching Christian experience.

Church Membership

Membership is by public confession of faith in Jesus Christ and baptism, by formal transfer of membership from another Christian denomination, or by reaffirmation of Christian faith.  We hope that you will have an opportunity to visit us soon.  There’s a place for YOU in our Church Family.
